Brazil eVisa: eligibility, documents and permitted stay
Travelers using U.S., Canadian or Australian passports generally need a visitor visa for tourism and eligible business visits under the rules reinstated on April 10, 2025. The official consular guidance directs eligible travelers to the electronic application channel. Other nationalities should check their own visa or exemption rules.
Entry-visa validity is different from the length of an authorized visit. Check the issued visa, nationality rules and entry record. An extension is a separate Federal Police request where available; a multiple-entry visa does not allow continuous residence.
Documents and application timing
Use the current official eVisa portal checklist for your nationality, age and purpose. A passport biographical-page copy and compliant photograph are core documents. Minors and special circumstances require additional records. Travel or financial evidence may be requested; do not rely on a universal US$2,000 balance or mandatory purchased-ticket rule.
The official FAQ advises applying two months before travel and describes processing after a completed, verified application reaches the consular post. Allow time for corrections and additional requests. Do not treat an estimate as a guaranteed approval date or buy nonrefundable travel on that assumption.

Frequently asked questions
Does an expired passport automatically cancel the eVisa?
No. The official FAQ says an eVisa remains valid until its own expiry date. Carry the expired passport associated with it, the new valid passport and the eVisa. If the old passport was lost or your identity details changed, check the current official instructions for your situation.
Can I work or move to Brazil with an eVisa?
An eVisa is visitor permission, not general authorization for employment or residence. Some short activities have specific visitor rules, but a move or productive assignment needs a separate assessment. See our immigration routes.
Can I extend it while in Brazil?
The relevant procedure is extension of the permitted visitor stay where available, not extension of the eVisa’s printed validity. A residence application is a different procedure and must have a qualifying legal basis.
How long is it valid?
Validity varies by nationality and the issued document. The usual published periods are ten years for U.S. passport holders and five years for Canadian and Australian passport holders; confirm the actual expiry and conditions on your visa.
What should I carry?
Carry your valid passport and a printed eVisa, plus any additional records relevant to entry. If relying on a visa associated with an expired passport, carry both passports as instructed above. Visa issuance does not guarantee admission at the border.
