Portugal’s qualified job-seeker route: check availability first

The former general job-seeker visa should not be treated as an open route for anyone who wants to find a job in Portugal. Article 57-A, as amended by Law 61/2025, now addresses qualified job seeking and specialized technical skills.

VFS’s October 23, 2025 notice states that applications under the earlier route ceased and that the replacement requires implementing regulation. Our review did not establish that a current qualified-job-seeker application channel is operational for U.S. applicants. An old downloadable checklist or visa category on a website is not confirmation that a post will accept a new filing.

What to confirm before spending money

• Whether the consular post responsible for your legal residence currently accepts this category.
• The operative definition of qualifying skills and the evidence it requires.
• The current checklist, appointment channel, permitted activity and residence steps after arrival.
• How the route fits your profession, employer prospects, household and travel plans.

Do not book a move using the former guide’s unrestricted job-search promise, old financial checklist or automatic transition sequence. Existing visa holders should have their issued visa and individual position reviewed rather than assuming that new-application notices cancel an already issued document.

If you already have an employer or another basis

A Portuguese job offer, a qualifying highly skilled role, independent activity or an established foreign remote-work arrangement may call for a different assessment. Review the Portugal immigration routes and provide the proposed duties and contract before choosing a category.

Questions clients commonly ask

Can I rely on the old 120-day guide? Not as a current filing checklist. Confirm the new route’s operational requirements with the responsible post.

Does a tourist stay authorize employment? Do not assume so. Entry permission, job searching, work authorization and residence are separate questions.

Can counsel guarantee an appointment or job? No. Our job-seeker visa service is currently unavailable. For other routes, any agreed legal work cannot guarantee employment or a government decision.
