What is the CPF Number?

A CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas) is Brazil’s 11-digit individual taxpayer number, issued by the Receita Federal (Brazil’s tax authority) and formatted XXX.XXX.XXX-XX. Foreigners need one to buy property, open a bank account, use Pix through an eligible account, or enter many contracts in Brazil — you do not need to live in Brazil to get one.

Before using your CPF: four checks

01 · Existing number

Already registered? Recover or correct that CPF; do not apply for another.

02 · Correct route

Choose where and how to apply based on where you live, your ID, and whether someone will apply for you.

03 · Matching details

Check that names, marriage details, and supporting documents match.

04 · Separate review

Check your CPF status. Banks, immigration authorities, and tax rules have separate requirements.

What Does a CPF Number Look Like?

A CPF number has 11 digits, written in the format XXX.XXX.XXX-XX. The first nine digits identify the holder; the final two are check digits calculated from the first nine. Passing a website’s check-digit test does not prove that a number was issued to you or that its registration has no outstanding issues. Use only your own registered number.

Is the CPF the Brazilian Social Security Number?

Not exactly. The CPF is Brazil’s closest comparison to the US Social Security Number, the UK National Insurance Number, or a European tax identification number — but they do not give you the same rights or benefits. First, the CPF is used widely in daily life: pharmacies, e-commerce checkouts, and SIM-card kiosks all ask for it. Second, unlike an SSN, any foreigner can get a CPF without residency, a visa, or a job in Brazil.

1. CPF: From Tax ID to Key to Life In Brazil

The CPF began as a tax identification number. Today it is also used to identify people across government systems and on the Carteira de Identidade Nacional (CIN), Brazil’s national identity card. Getting a CPF does not itself give a foreign citizen that identity card.

CPF as an identifier

Brazil uses the CPF to connect a person’s records across government systems. When a foreigner attempts to purchase a SIM card in Rio de Janeiro, the telecom operator’s system may check CPF information to check the applicant’s identity. If the status is “Suspended” or the data does not match the details entered (e.g., a misspelling of the mother’s name), the transaction may be delayed or rejected, depending on the provider.

Who Needs a CPF?

You may need a CPF even if you do not earn income in Brazil. Foreign citizens, resident or non-resident, with property, investments, or other rights that must be officially recorded in Brazil may need a CPF. This includes:

  • Real Estate Investors: Individual buyers need a CPF for the property transaction. Confirm the identification and CPF requirements for each buyer and any spouse whose details must appear in the documents.
  • Banking and investments: Opening an individual bank account, including a Non-Resident Bank Account known as Conta de Domiciliado no Exterior (CDE), commonly requires a CPF and additional identification. This extends to investments in the capital markets and ownership of Brazilian companies.
  • Corporate Shareholders: Foreign individuals who own shares in Brazilian companies may need CPFs. The requirements for shareholders, representatives, and people who ultimately own or control the company depend on their role and the current registration rules.
  • People receiving an inheritance: Foreign heirs may need a CPF for inheritance, tax, and ownership records. Your lawyer should confirm which heirs, beneficiaries, and spouses require registration in your case.
  • Property Rentals: A CPF and a passport are commonly requested for a lease. Landlords and providers may also ask for guarantees, proof of income, or other documents.
  • Everyday Consumers: Utility contracts (electricity, internet), mobile phone plans, and even online purchases from major retailers often require CPF information in their registration systems.

The CPF is often an early administrative step in a Brazilian property purchase. Get legal advice and begin the necessary checks at the same time; do not wait for the number before asking a lawyer to review the purchase.

2. How to Get a CPF in 2026

If you live abroad, start by checking the instructions of the Brazilian consulate serving your area. Having someone apply for you in Brazil may be another option. Consider where you live, the documents needed, appointment availability, and cost.

Choose the route according to your location, documents, appointment availability, and transaction deadline. You do not have to hire someone to apply for a CPF; the need for independent advice on the property purchase is a separate issue.

Which route applies?

Your situation Starting point Important distinction

Applying through a representative in Brazil Confirm the power of attorney, identity documents, and requirements of the office handling the application. Ask whether the documents need official certification or translation.
Already in Brazil Receita Federal or an appropriate authorized service point. Passport-only requests require in-person handling under current Receita guidance.

2.1 Abroad Option #1: The Consulate

The Brazilian government directs foreign citizens living abroad to its consulates. Follow the instructions of the consulate serving the area where you live; appointment systems vary.

  • Which consulate: Brazilian consulates serve different areas. Confirm which one covers your address and the proof of residence it requires before applying.
  • E-consular: Many consulates use the e-consular system for document submission and scheduling. Read the specific consulate’s instructions before preparing the file.
  • Process: You may need to upload scans of the required documents for an initial check. Some consulates let you book an in-person appointment only after staff approve those documents.
  • Availability: Appointment slots and processing times vary. Check current availability rather than relying on a general estimate for all consulates.
  • At the appointment: On the day of the appointment, the applicant should attend as instructed with original documents. The consular agent processes the request, which is then sent to the Receita Federal in Brazil. Delivery and processing time depend on the way your consulate handles applications; confirm how you will receive proof of registration.

Costs and planning

The consular CPF service is free. Travel, document preparation, authentication, translation, and optional professional assistance may involve separate costs. Allow time for additional requirements before agreeing to a property deadline.

2.2 Representation through a power of attorney

For applicants who cannot attend a Brazilian consulate abroad, representation in Brazil may be an alternative. A power of attorney (POA) is a document authorizing someone to act for you. It must be correctly signed and specifically allow the CPF application. Confirm the receiving office’s requirements before preparing it.

  • Prepare the authorization: confirm the POA and supporting documents needed for your case, including the representative’s identification and CPF.
  • Certifying the POA: A document signed abroad may need an apostille or consular legalization—official certification for use in another country. The rules depend on where it was issued and any applicable agreement between countries. Confirm whether a translation is needed too.
  • Representation and follow-up: the representative submits the application in Brazil and follows up on requirements. Representation does not remove the government’s document checks.

2.3 Applying while you are in Brazil

For foreigners physically present in Brazil, Receita Federal service points and the authorized partner network are possible channels. Check which location handles your type of identification and request before visiting.

  • Cost: CPF registration is free through the applicable official channels, except at authorized partner offices (unidades conveniadas), for which the government service page lists R$7.00. This is separate from any private professional fee.
  • Data Entry Errors: Incorrectly entered names or missing parents’ names can create inconsistencies. Even a “regular” CPF may contain data that does not match other documents. These inconsistencies can cause difficulties when attempting to open bank accounts or complete the bank’s identity checks later, requiring clarification or correction.
  • Language: Do not assume English-language assistance is available. Arrange suitable help if you cannot understand the requirements or verify the information entered.

Email and passport-only requests: Receita Federal states that foreigners outside Brazil cannot request initial CPF registration by email. It also directs passport-only foreign applicants to in-person service, including when someone applies on their behalf. Submitting an online form does not mean your CPF has been issued.

3. Comparing the routes abroad

If you need a CPF for an upcoming purchase or other deadline, allow time for documents, appointments, and follow-up requests. The way you apply can affect how long it takes.

Choosing a route: Consular requirements and appointment availability vary. If attending a consulate abroad is not possible, consider representation in Brazil through a correctly prepared power of attorney. Check the required documents and expected timing before committing to a transaction deadline.

Doing it While Physically in Brazil:

In Brazil, confirm the appropriate Receita Federal or partner service point and any appointment requirements. Processing time depends on the application route and documents. Published processing estimates do not include every delay in obtaining documents or securing appointments.

4. The FCPF Form

For those applying through a consulate, the Ficha Cadastral de Pessoa Física (FCPF) is part of the application. This form is accessible at: https://servicos.receita.fazenda.gov.br/Servicos/CPF/cpfEstrangeiro/Fcpf.asp and the screenshots below illustrate it. Follow the current official instructions if the website looks different:

Illustrative example. Follow the current instructions for your application channel.

Select your actual country of residence. If you live in Brazil, do not enter a foreign address merely to reach a different form. Nationality and residence are separate facts.

Follow the form and the receiving office’s instructions. An application form or receipt does not itself prove that a CPF has been issued.

Illustrative example. Follow the current instructions for your application channel.

Check the application carefully before submitting it. Do not invent information to bypass a required field or rely on an old screenshot when the current form differs.

4.1 The “Título de Eleitor” field

Foreign applicants generally do not have a Brazilian voter registration number. Receita Federal says a voter ID document is no longer required for CPF services. Do not invent a number to fill this field.

  • If the form requires information that does not apply to you, ask the receiving office how to proceed. The final application receipt may open in a pop-up window. Allow pop-ups for the official site if needed, and save the receipt and application reference number for your appointment.

4.2 The “Mother’s Name” Requirement

Brazil often uses parents’ names, especially the mother’s name, to tell apart people who have the same name. The Portuguese word for this information is filiação.

  • The Mismatch: A US or UK passport typically does not list parents’ names. If a foreigner applies using only their passport, a birth or marriage certificate may be needed to show parents’ names or other missing identification details.
  • The Impact: When this individual later attempts to open a bank account, the bank’s identity checks may request a birth certificate. If the bank enters the mother’s name from the certificate, but the CPF record says “Not Stated,” the institution may request correction or clarification due to “Dados Cadastrais Inconsistentes” (Inconsistent Registration Data).
  • Best Practice: CPF applications may need to be supported by a birth certificate or a marriage certificate that shows parents’ names. Confirm the documents required for your route and check names carefully; correct preparation does not guarantee banking or service-provider approval.

4.3 Printing and signing the application

Once you finish entering information, click on “Submit” to move to the next step.

Allow pop-ups for the official site if needed so you can open and print the completed form.

Illustrative application form:

Illustrative example. Follow the current instructions for your application channel.

Your application form will be issued digitally, and it will already be filled with some of the information you submitted in the previous step.

Sign the form! You need to sign the form under “Assinatura” and enter the city where you are under “Localidade”. Then, scan the form. Follow the receiving office’s current signing and submission instructions.

4.4 Take a clear picture of your passport

You need a clear picture or scanned copy of your passport.

Make sure everything is readable and your face is also showing clearly. Some passports have a plastic layer on top of the paper that may cause issues when a flash or bright light is used when taking a picture.

4.5 Identity-confirmation photo, if requested

If your chosen channel requests a photo holding your identification, follow its current instructions. Submit identity documents only through the verified official or professional channel.

Example selfie holding passport for CPF application identity confirmation
Illustrative example. Follow the current instructions for your application channel.

Upload the requested files through the correct consular system, if required. Confirm any remaining appointment or original-document requirements.

Common problems include uploading the wrong files, missing birth or marriage certificates, not saving the application receipt, and differences in names or parents’ details.

Before submission, check the file by:

  • reviewing your FCPF form entries, especially parents’ names, nationality, and country of residence,
  • preparing the requested files with readable scans and the correct documents, and
  • confirming how to handle any field or difference in the details that you cannot resolve accurately.

5. Banking and Money Services

Many people need a CPF for banking or payments. Getting the number does not guarantee approval for a bank account, payment service, or transfer.

5.1 Non-Resident Bank Accounts

A non-resident bank account may be appropriate when you live outside Brazil. Availability, required documents, permitted transactions, and fees depend on the institution.

  • Eligibility: Confirm that the institution currently accepts your nationality, country of residence, and intended use.
  • The Role of CPF: Many banks let you start an application online by entering your CPF. They also check your identity and whether you qualify for the account. If the CPF has a warning or the name does not match your documents, you may need to explain or correct it.
  • Cost: Bank fees vary. Compare current account charges and services directly with the institution before applying.

Banks, documents, and timelines for the CDE route are covered step by step in our guide to opening a non-resident bank account in Brazil.

5.2 Money Apps and Payment Accounts

A payment account may be an option if you mainly need to make payments or transfers. Check what it offers; it may not provide the same services as a bank account.

  • Payment services: Verify which currencies, balances, transfers, and account details are available for your residence and circumstances. A CPF does not grant access to every product.

Moving a property purchase price rather than pocket money? That is a regulated foreign-exchange operation — see Sending Money to Brazil.

5.3 Pix and your CPF

Brazil’s instant payment system, Pix, is widely used. It is used for everything from purchasing real estate to paying for a coconut on the beach. Account eligibility, transaction limits, and payment controls still apply.

  • Account access: A CPF alone is not a Pix account. Confirm the institution’s account-opening requirements, transaction limits, and payment checks.
  • The Key: Once a non-resident bank or Fintech account is opened, the CPF can serve as a “Pix Key” (Chave Pix). Other keys include email, a mobile number, or a random key; you need not share your CPF as the payment key. Pix supports domestic payments, subject to the institution’s controls and limits.

If your goal is banking access (CDE accounts, opening an account with a financial app, and Pix), the CPF data should match the documents banks will request later.

6. Property Purchases and Company Ownership

The CPF identifies individuals in property and company records. It does not replace the property’s own registry record or a company’s CNPJ (its business tax number).

If you are buying property in Brazil, obtain or check your CPF early. Legal advice and property and seller checks can begin while registration is being resolved. See where it fits in our guide to buying property in Brazil.

6.1 Identifying buyers and sellers in property records

The deed and property registry documents must correctly identify the people involved. Your lawyer should confirm what the notary and the registry responsible for the property need for your purchase.

  • Individual CPF: Each person has their own CPF. Confirm the requirements for buyers and spouses according to who will own the property, whether they are married, and which marital property rules apply. Provide accurate birth, marriage, or divorce records; do not omit a spouse to bypass a requirement.
  • Property and seller checks: The seller’s CPF helps identify the right person when checking records. The property has its own official record, called a matrícula, held by the responsible property registry. Getting your CPF does not mean the property or seller has been checked. Your lawyer should decide which searches are needed and explain what the results mean.

6.2 Identifying the people behind a company

Buying through a company raises separate questions about registering the company, who may act for it, who owns it, and taxes. A CPF alone does not resolve these questions.

  • The Requirement: A beneficial owner is a person who ultimately owns or controls a company. Ask your adviser which people must be identified under the current company-registration rules and which need CPFs. Do not assume every person involved has the same requirements.
  • Planning: Identify required shareholders, representatives, and beneficial-owner information before agreeing on deadlines for forming the company or completing the purchase.

For transactions with deadlines (real estate closing, corporate filings, investment steps), the CPF is often a source of delay—especially when required participants are missing CPFs or when CPF data does not match birth, marriage, or other identity documents.

7. Inheritance

When someone dies leaving assets in Brazil, there are legal steps to divide and register those assets. A CPF helps identify foreign heirs in this process.

7.1 Identifying the heirs

When a person dies leaving assets in Brazil, those assets form an Espólio (Estate). Identify the CPFs and birth, marriage, and other identity documents required for the relevant estate, tax, and registration procedures.

  • The Requirement: Heirs—whether a spouse, child, or beneficiary named in a will—may need a valid CPF for the inheritance process (inventário), tax forms, and ownership records.
  • The Consequence: Missing identification can delay particular filings or transfers. Do not assume that every inheritance case must stop at the same stage; ask the lawyer what can proceed.

7.2 Inheritance tax (ITCMD)

An inheritance in Brazil may involve a state tax called ITCMD. Your adviser should check whether tax is due, whether an exemption applies, what forms are needed, and how payment must be made.

  • The Payment: State treasury systems use taxpayer identification in declarations and payment documents. Confirm the relevant state’s requirements.
  • Planning: Obtain the CPFs required for the case early, while your lawyer reviews the estate, deadlines, and tax position.

If a Brazilian probate (Inventário) is stalled because one or more foreign heirs do not have CPFs, timing and coordination matter.

8. Property Rentals

Whether you are looking to rent out a vacation property or find a place to live, the CPF is commonly used in the Brazilian rental market.

8.1 The Foreign Landlord

If you own property in Brazil and receive rent from it, you have income from Brazil. Ask a tax adviser how it must be reported and taxed.

  • Real Estate Agencies: Real estate agencies (Imobiliárias) commonly request the landlord’s CPF. They use it to generate the monthly statements and for applicable reporting of the transaction to the Receita Federal (via a declaration called DIMOB).
  • Tax: Rent received by a non-resident is generally taxed through withholding, meaning tax is taken from the payment. Do not use the monthly Carnê-Leão system for residents simply because your tenant is an individual. Ask who must deduct and pay the tax and submit any required forms. Tax debts and CPF registration status are different matters.

8.2 The Foreign Tenant

Finding a long-term rental in Brazil without a CPF is notoriously difficult.

  • Digital Platforms: Rental platforms may rely on the CPF for identity verification and credit checks. Check the current requirements and whether a route exists for foreign applicants.
  • Offline deals: Landlords and agencies may request a CPF, identification, proof of income, and an acceptable guarantee. Having a CPF does not prove you can afford the rent or oblige a landlord to accept you.
  • Utilities: Connecting electricity (Enel/Light) or internet (Vivo/Claro) in your name commonly requires a CPF. Confirm the provider’s requirements and agree who will hold and pay the accounts. Here, too, a Brazilian immigration identity card (CRNM) may also be required depending on the utility company.

9. Everyday Consumer Purchases

Brazilian businesses often ask customers for identification. For the foreign resident or long-term tourist, the lack of a CPF can complicate some purchases and subscriptions.

9.1 CPF at checkout

At a shop, “CPF na nota?” means “Would you like your CPF on the receipt?” That question does not mean every ordinary purchase legally requires a CPF. Some requests are optional; particular services or online purchases may have different requirements.

  • E-commerce: Brazilian retailers may require CPF information in their account or checkout systems. Check the seller’s current requirements and any option for foreign customers.
  • Deliveries: Delivery services often use the CPF to verify the identity of the recipient upon delivery, creating another difficulty for those without one.

9.2 Phone services and tickets

  • SIM Cards: Some tourist-focused or passport-based options may be available. Ask the carrier which route and documents it accepts instead of assuming a CPF is universally required.
  • Events and Entertainment: Ticket platforms may require a CPF to register and buy tickets. Tickets may be linked to your name or CPF, and you may be asked to prove ownership at the gate. Check the platform’s current foreign-customer instructions.

10. International Shipments

A frequently overlooked area is the receipt of packages from abroad. Check the carrier’s identification and customs requirements before the shipment is sent.

10.1 Identify the recipient correctly

For imported goods delivered through Correios, its current guidance requires a regular CPF and a recipient name matching the Receita Federal record.

  • The information: Provide the correct recipient details when ordering and confirm any additional documentation for the shipment.
  • The Consequence: Missing or inconsistent information can cause delays or returns. Follow the carrier’s tracking and instructions promptly; do not assume a package can be collected without customs clearance.

10.2 The “Minhas Importações” Portal

To manage incoming packages, residents use the Minhas Importações portal on the Correios website. Follow its current identification requirements to pay import duties or link a shipment to your identity. For foreigners expecting personal belongings or documents via courier (DHL/FedEx), identification requirements and clearance procedures should be confirmed with the carrier before sending them.

11. Tax Residency

Having a CPF does not by itself make you a Brazilian tax resident. Listing a foreign address does not settle your tax position either.

11.1 Non-Resident vs. Resident Status

  • Non-residents: Income or profits from Brazil may still require you to pay tax or submit tax forms. These are not the same as the annual resident income-tax return. Obtain advice on the income or transaction involved.
  • Becoming resident: Time in Brazil is one factor, and your immigration status or work in Brazil may make you a tax resident sooner. Do not rely on a day count or immigration label alone. Have an adviser review your full situation before drawing conclusions.
  • What this means: Brazilian tax residents are generally taxed on income from Brazil and abroad. An adviser should check the rules, any available deductions or credits, and required tax forms. The public CPF status check does not tell you whether you are a tax resident.
  • There is no automatic “tax-free period” created by obtaining a CPF or buying a property. Immigration residence, tax residence, and CPF registration are separate questions.

12. Checking and Fixing CPF Problems

You may already have a CPF but be unable to use it because the record shows a problem. Find out what the warning means and what caused it before submitting corrections or tax returns.

12.1 CPF Status Issues and Potential Fixes

Start by identifying the registration status and its cause. The following sections explain common issues and the checks needed before taking action.

12.2 “Pendente de Regularização” (Pending Regularization)

This status points to a missing income-tax return in the Receita Federal record. It does not explain why that return is missing or whether the return was actually required.

  • The Trigger: It indicates that the system expected an Income Tax Return (Declaração de Imposto de Renda) for a specific year, and none was received.
  • What to do: First, ask Receita Federal which tax year is causing the warning. Then check whether you were required to file a return. File an accurate return if required, or ask how to correct the record if the requirement is wrong. Our legal team can review the issue and advise on the appropriate next steps. Do not file a zero-value return merely to clear a warning.

12.3 “Suspenso” (Suspended)

Unlike a missing tax return, this warning concerns incomplete or incorrect details in your CPF record.

  • The Trigger: Incomplete or inconsistent data. Common causes include incomplete or mismatched identity details. Check the actual record; do not assume a voting issue or tax debt caused the status.
  • If the online route does not accept the request, check the available official correction or in-person channels. Do not invent a voter number or create another CPF.
  • The Resolution: Correct or complete the record through the applicable Receita Federal procedure. Professional assistance may be useful for a difficult case, but you do not always need a lawyer to update your CPF record.

12.4 “Nulo” (Null)

Nula means the registration was declared invalid because fraud was found. Cancelada means cancelled, which can happen because of a duplicate number or a decision by an authority or court. Ask Receita Federal what to do in your case; do not assume you should apply for a new number.

If your CPF cannot be used, start by finding out why. The right fix depends on the warning and your circumstances.

Oliveira Lawyers helps foreign citizens troubleshoot CPF issues by:

  • identifying what is actually triggering the status issue,
  • preparing the correct supporting documents and filings, and
  • guiding the application or correction steps needed to address the issue for banking, real estate, and services.

CPF questions for foreign citizens

What is a CPF?

A CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas) is Brazil’s federal taxpayer ID number for individuals. It’s managed by Brazil’s Federal Revenue Service (Receita Federal) and is used as a primary identifier in many everyday transactions in Brazil.

What is a CPF used for in real life?

Foreigners most commonly need a CPF to:

  • buy/sell real estate, sign deeds, and complete notary/registry steps,
  • open bank accounts and use many financial services,
  • activate phone plans,
  • shop online (Brazilian websites often require it), and
  • sign up for utilities, schools, and other service providers that “expect” a CPF field.
Do I need a CPF if I’m only visiting Brazil as a tourist?

Brazil does not require a CPF just to enter or travel as a tourist. In practice, though, many private companies build their checkout or sign-up systems around CPF, which can cause difficulties without one (especially online purchases and subscriptions).

Does a CPF give me residency, permission to work, or make me a tax resident?

No. A CPF is an identification number. It is not a visa, does not grant residency, and does not authorize work in Brazil.

Also, simply having a CPF does not automatically make you a Brazilian tax resident. Tax residency and requirements to submit tax returns depend on your immigration/residency situation, time in Brazil, and whether your income comes from Brazil or abroad.

Is a CPF required to buy or sell real estate in Brazil?

In most real estate transactions, yes. A CPF is commonly required to sign contracts and complete notary and registry steps. If you are buying property in Brazil, getting a CPF is usually an early step.

Is a CPF enough to open a bank account or use Pix?

A CPF is typically necessary, but it’s usually not sufficient by itself. Many banks (including digital banks) also ask for additional documents such as proof of address and a Brazilian immigration ID/status document, depending on the institution’s rules and risk checks.

Do I need a CPF to get a Brazilian SIM card or phone plan?

Often, yes. Many travelers and expats report that carriers request a CPF to activate a SIM or set up a plan, although some tourist-focused SIM/eSIM options may work without one. The reality varies by carrier, city, and how/where you purchase.

Do I need a CPF for online shopping, delivery apps, and Brazilian websites?

Very often, yes. A lot of Brazilian platforms require CPF to create an account or complete checkout, and sometimes they require CPF information to match the payment method (for example, certain marketplaces).

Can foreigners get a CPF even if they are not residents of Brazil?

Yes. Brazil allows CPF registration for Brazilian and foreign citizens, including residents and non-residents.

Can I apply for a CPF before I arrive in Brazil?

Yes. If you are outside Brazil, you can apply through Brazil’s consular network (consulate/embassy responsible for the area where you live).

I live outside Brazil. What is the correct way to apply in 2026?

For foreign citizens residing abroad, the Brazilian government’s guidance is to apply in person at a Brazilian consulate/embassy (a post of the Brazilian consular network). Many posts use the e-Consular system for scheduling.

Can a foreigner apply online from abroad instead of going to a consulate?

Completing a form online is only one step. For clients unable to attend a consulate abroad, our lawyers apply on their behalf in Brazil using an apostilled power of attorney. Our service is having a representative apply for you; we do not offer direct digital filing from abroad. Confirm document-certification and document requirements for your case.

I’m already in Brazil. How do I apply for a CPF?

If you are in Brazil, CPF applications can typically be initiated online and/or handled through Receita Federal channels, partner service points, or the partner network listed by the government (depending on your case and location).

Where can I apply in Brazil, and how much does it cost?

Government guidance indicates:

  • CPF registration is free when done via official channels, except when done at certain partner/conveniada units, which currently charge a fee (listed as R$ 7,00 on gov.br).
  • In-person options in Brazil commonly include Cartório de Registro Civil, Banco do Brasil, Caixa Econômica Federal, and Correios, plus Receita Federal service points depending on the request.
What documents do foreigners usually need for a CPF application?

Generally, you should expect to provide:

  • an official photo ID, and
  • a birth certificate or marriage certificate (or equivalent) if the photo ID does not clearly show nationality, parents’ names (filiação), and date of birth.

Additional documents may be requested depending on the case and channel.

Which identity documents are accepted for foreigners?

The accepted ID depends on whether you live abroad, are visiting, or live in Brazil. The official list includes the examples below. Confirm which document is accepted for your situation before attending:

  • Living abroad or visiting: a passport, a Brazilian immigration identity card (CRNM or the older CIE/RNE), or certain national identity cards accepted under Mercosur agreements.
  • Living in Brazil: a Brazilian immigration identity card or application receipt; certain refugee documents or application receipts; a consular registration certificate with a photo; or certain Mercosur identity cards. Check the current requirements for your document.
Do I need a Brazilian address to get a CPF?

Not necessarily. CPF registration is available for non-residents, and the application form includes “country of residence” style fields. You do, however, need to provide an address in the application, and the information must reflect your actual residence.

Why does the CPF form ask for parents’ names (mother’s name) and other personal details?

Brazil commonly uses filiação (parents’ names) as part of identity matching. If your photo ID does not show nationality, parents’ names, and date of birth, the government may require a birth certificate or marriage certificate (or equivalent) to complete identification.

Can I obtain a CPF for my child (minor)?

Yes. Government guidance specifically covers CPF requests for minors, including what a parent/guardian must present and how requirements differ for:

  • children under 16, and
  • ages 16–17.
Can I authorize a representative or lawyer to apply for me?

Yes. Oliveira Lawyers applies on behalf of clients who cannot attend a consulate abroad using an apostilled power of attorney. We review your circumstances and documents before proceeding with representation in Brazil. The required certification depends on where and how the power of attorney is signed.

How long does it take to get a CPF?

Processing time depends on the application route and documents, appointment availability, and any additional requirements. Ask the receiving office or representative for a current estimate and mention any purchase or other deadline; do not treat an estimate as a guaranteed maximum.

Do I get a physical CPF card? How do I prove my CPF number?

A CPF is primarily a number. In most situations, you use a digital or printed proof (often called a “cartão”/comprovante of CPF registration), not a separate plastic ID card.

How do I check my CPF status, and what does the “Comprovante de Situação Cadastral” show?

You can check CPF status using Receita Federal’s public CPF status page. The result shows the status of your registration. It does not show your income, finances, or whether you owe tax.

What are the possible CPF statuses, and what do they mean?

Common CPF status labels include:

  • Regular: no registration issues found.
  • Suspensa: registration data is incomplete or incorrect.
  • Pendente de regularização: typically indicates missing required income tax returns (DIRPF) for past years, if you were required to file.
  • Cancelada / Nula / Titular falecido: other administrative statuses that can arise due to duplication, fraud, or recorded death.
What if my CPF is “Suspensa”?

“Suspensa” generally means your CPF record needs correction or completion. The government provides CPF update/regularization paths (some online, some in-person). If submitting by email (where available), you may be asked to provide a photo of yourself holding your ID next to your face for identity confirmation.

What if my CPF is “Pendente de Regularização”?

This status commonly points to missing income tax returns (DIRPF) when a person was required to file. Fixing it usually means submitting the missing returns (even late), or correcting the situation if the status was applied in error.

I forgot my CPF number. How can I recover it?

Do not apply for a second number. Check earlier official records and ask Receita Federal about the steps to confirm your identity and recover the number. A consulate may direct you to Receita Federal because access to the record is restricted.

Does CPF expire? What is the “recadastramento” (registration-update) requirement for foreigners abroad?

A CPF number does not “expire” like a visa, but your CPF can become irregular/suspended if requirements are not met.

Foreigners with registered addresses abroad should check the current Receita Federal and responsible consulate instructions for any requirement to update their registration (recadastramento). Do not assume that having the number is sufficient indefinitely, or that an old annual-renewal notice proves the current procedure.

Is it safe to share my CPF? How can I protect myself from misuse?

Treat your CPF like a personal information. Many Brazilian companies ask for it, but you should still share it only when it’s needed and with people or organizations you trust.

Brazil also offers an official “Protect My CPF” service that helps prevent unwanted inclusion of your CPF in company registrations, and you must meet its gov.br sign-in requirements.

Can Oliveira Lawyers help me obtain or regularize a CPF?

Yes. We regularly help foreign clients obtain a CPF and keep the record consistent (which matters later for banks, real estate closings, and apps). Depending on where you are located, we can:

  • confirm the best application path (Brazil vs consulate),
  • prepare/review the required forms and supporting documents,
  • help you avoid common rejections caused by mismatched names, missing parents’ names, or inconsistent addresses, and
  • assist with CPF updates or corrections when a status issue comes up.
Where can I find the original source of information from the Brazilian government on the CPF tax ID?

The official CPF rules are in IN RFB 2,172/2024, including later changes. This replaced the older IN RFB 1,548/2015. You can find the current rule in the official sources below.

To read the Portuguese pages in English, use your browser’s translation option. In browsers that support it, right-click the page and choose “Translate into English.” Translation can help you read the instructions, but ask the receiving office about anything unclear before applying.

How can I check if my CPF number remains active?

The Brazilian Tax Revenue offers a CPF checker application so you can check the status of your CPF number: https://servicos.receita.fazenda.gov.br/servicos/cpf/consultasituacao/consultapublica.asp

The CPF number should be entered in the first box, while the CPF holder’s date of birth should be entered in the second one. Note that the date format in Brazil is: DD/MM/YYYY (day/month/year).
