Planning a longer stay in Brazil

This article originally discussed options in 2023. The guidance below was revised in October 2026. Choose a residence basis that matches your real circumstances rather than ranking routes as universally best or worst.

Start with the reason for your stay

  • Digital nomad residence may suit qualifying remote work for a foreign employer or client arrangement. Review the work evidence, funds and applicable application requirements.
  • Retirement residence requires the relevant retirement or pension and transfer evidence; a savings balance is not automatically equivalent.
  • Real-estate investment residence depends on qualifying property and funds, followed by an application. It does not deliver immediate indefinite residence.
  • Family, work, study and other residence routes should be assessed when they fit the applicant’s relationship, nationality or proposed activity.

Separate four decisions

Entry: nationality and travel purpose determine whether a visa is needed. A visitor’s permitted stay is not the same as the visa’s validity.

Residence: identify the legal basis and correct application channel. A request inside Brazil is possible for some categories, but should not be assumed to be available or faster for everyone.

Work and tax: review the activity permitted by the chosen status and the separate tax-residence rules before starting work or moving income and assets.

Long-term plans: renewals, indefinite residence and naturalization have their own conditions. Keep records of residence, travel and changes in circumstances.

Property and business decisions deserve their own review

A property investment is not inherently safe because it may support immigration. Likewise, a genuine business or family route should not be dismissed through a general ranking. Assess commercial risk, family facts and legal eligibility separately. The firm’s current scope and engagement terms should be confirmed for the proposed work.

For the legal framework, consult Decree 9,199/2017 and the regulations for the chosen route.

Discuss your plans with our team. We will assess the facts and define the work included in the engagement.
