Health Insurance for Brazil’s Digital Nomad Visa: When It’s Required (and When It Isn’t)

The requirement depends on the application route

RN 45/2021, Article 3, requires health insurance valid in Brazil for a digital-nomad visa application at a consulate. Article 4 lists the documents for a residence request made while in Brazil and does not list the same insurance requirement.

That distinction does not establish that every applicant should avoid the consular route, or that healthcare coverage is unnecessary. Choose the immigration sequence using your eligibility, documents, current status and travel plans.

Check the responsible consulate’s checklist before buying

The policy documents should clearly identify the insured person, territorial coverage including Brazil and the relevant coverage period. Confirm any additional wording or benefits required by the post handling your application.

Do not assume all consulates reject travel medical insurance: the Porto consulate’s guidance, for example, lists travel or health insurance valid in Brazil and an applicable medical-assistance certificate. That does not make every travel policy acceptable at every post.

Assess coverage separately from visa acceptance

  • Does the policy cover the entire intended stay and residence abroad?
  • Which hospitals and doctors are accessible where you plan to live?
  • Must you pay first and claim reimbursement, or is direct billing available?
  • What deductibles, limits, exclusions and waiting periods apply?
  • Are ongoing conditions, prescriptions and routine care covered?
  • What happens on renewal, an extended stay or an emergency transfer?

Ask the insurer for written answers and the policy wording. Acceptance as an immigration document does not guarantee that a particular provider will bill the insurer directly or that every treatment is covered.

Local and international plans

Availability, enrollment documents, price and coverage vary by insurer and product. A CRNM does not automatically guarantee access to every Brazilian plan or a lower premium. Likewise, international insurance should not be dismissed as unusable merely because it was purchased abroad.

Compare the actual terms with a qualified insurance professional. Our immigration role is to assess the required application evidence; insurance suitability and claims handling are separate questions.

Next steps

Review the digital-nomad route and the application-location guide before committing to travel. Provide the policy certificate and wording if insurance evidence forms part of your application.

For longer-term planning, a medical power of attorney and living will address different needs from insurance.
