IT for the Financial Segment

After suffering hyperinflation and a bad government in the 1970’s and 1980’s, Brazil’s financial sector has turned around. Now, the Brazilian Payment system is one of the most sophisticated banking systems in the world. Electronic payments are easy and advanced. Without information technology, Brazil’s banking system wouldn’t be vastly different than that in any other country. The system is fast and secure while saving paper and postage. Banks, private pension, finance firms, brokerage firms and private pensions currently make up for approximately 20% of the total amount invested in information technology in Brazil. In 2008, it was 42%, but the manufacturing industry is now the largest investor in IT.

IT for Manufacturing

The manufacturing segment of Brazil has actually made the most investments in IT of any other sector. This is mostly because of the competitiveness of Brazil’s export manufacturing business. Brazil is the leader in the exportation of numerous goods around the world. Chemical, base metal, and pharmaceutical companies are heavy users of IT products such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Business Intelligence (BI). Each of these IT programs make manufacturing and exportation easier and more efficient, which solidifies Brazil’s position as a world leader.

IT for Retail

Retail in Brazil is also competitive. Businesses in the retail sector are constantly looking to expand their company in every way possible. Many use information technology for Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and electronic commerce transactions. More recently, many companies in Brazil have started using radio-frequency identification (RFID) to track the transport of goods both domestically and internationally. This tracking system helps businesses see where their shipping slows down and provides insight into ways to make it more efficient.

Government

Even the Brazilian government has been benefitting from the rise of information technology in the country. In May 2009, a law was passed that requires government agencies to report their revenue online to be more transparent with the public. Brazil was even one of the first countries to allow electronic voting in the 1996 elections. The tax system in Brazil is almost exclusively based on the Internet.

Information technology has largely contributed to the rise of Brazil’s economy and global standing. Without it, it is difficult to foresee where the country would be now in terms of financial stability and success. The hard times that Brazil went through after the 1960’s taught the country a lesson regarding to experience in financial management. Therefore, when information technology options became available, it was quickly promoted and expanded.
